On Sunday, March 24, over 24,000 athletes and more than thirty professional runners took to the Los Angeles streets for the 34thedition of the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon.The race’s iconic “Stadium to the Sea” course lined with live entertainment including more than 50 bands, 500 cheerleaders, 4 entertainment centers and 90 cheer zonesset the stage for an exciting day of running. From two of the most competitive races in the history of the Marathon, Kenyan Elisha Barno and Ethiopian Askale Merachi emerged as champions.Both wins were notable: Askale broke the 12-year old women’s course record and Barno recorded his second win in Los Angeles. The winners each took home $23,000 each of the $100,000 purse.
“We couldn’t have been more enthused by the near-perfect running conditions for the 34th Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon,” said Murphy Reinschreiber, Chief Operating Officer of Conqur Endurance Group, the producer of the Marathon. “Once again, we are extremely proud of the amazing turnout from runners and the community who cheered and supported the runners from the neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica. The Stadium to the Sea Course put its best foot forward today on its 10th Anniversary. Congratulations to everyone who completed the race on Sunday and we look forward to seeing you back next year on March 8th.”
The Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon also welcomed Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels starts Justin Turner and Albert Pujols, who acted as honorary starters and to support runners raising funds for their foundations.
Reinforcing Conqur Endurance Group’s commitment to making an economic and social impact at the annual Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon, athletes representing 70 charity partners ran to raise awareness and funds for their causes through the Marathon’s Official Charity Program. An estimated $3.5 million will be raised in total from this year’s Marathon.
Additionally, Conqur Endurance Group once again supported Students Run LA with nearly $1 million in goods and services. This program provides 3,200 at-risk students with mentors and coaching to train for and run the Marathon each year. . This year’s race marked the 30th Anniversary of Students Run LA. More than 63,000 students have finished the Los Angeles Marathon over the years.
